AB499 Talking Points

AB 499 would permit a minor, who is 12 years of age or older, to consent to receiving vaccines or other drugs related to the prevention of a sexually transmitted disease without the knowledge of his or her parent.

All vaccines and drugs have the potential for allergic reactions and side effects that can be life threatening or life altering. The risks are small, but children have died and become completely disabled after receiving these vaccines. Here are objections to AB 499 that CCG included in its letter to the California State Senate:

Stealth Vaccine Laws Allow Children to Consent to Vaccines (legal discussion - NaturalNews.com)

  1. AB 499 violates the rights of parents to fulfill their responsibilities for the health and welfare of their children.
  2. Vaccines can have serious side effects including death and debilitating conditions. For instance, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has received reports 68 deaths after receiving Gardasil, one of the drugs covered by this bill.   3. Children are not equipped to stand up to the authority of adults, to do research, to ask questions, and to understand statistics about health risks that would enable them to make informed decisions.
  4. This bill opens the door for adults from schools, Planned Parenthood or youth health centers with ulterior motives or profit incentives to coerce, scare or otherwise influence children into consenting to vaccines or treatments that they do not need. There are no protections against coercion built in the bill or even provisions for informing the children that the vaccine and treatments have resulted death, maiming and other wide ranging consequences for children who have received them in the past.
  5. If parents are unaware that their children have received vaccines and medications, they cannot be vigilant for allergic reactions and side effects that require immediate treatment to prevent death or serious and permanent health consequences.
  6. In addition to the serious health risks associated with vaccines and powerful medication, promoting a vaccine to children that is only necessary because of promiscuous sexual activity sends a very negative message to them that such activity is normative and ignores the other health, emotional, and moral consequences of such behavior.

 Unanswered questions that the Senate Judiciary Committee did no address regarding AB 499.

Other facts:

  • This bill is designed to create the broadest 12-17 year old market possible for Merck by including inoculation of boys, although the Center for Disease Control currently only recommends it for girls. That doubles potential sales.
  • Consequently, based on Senate Appropriations Committee figures, this bill could mean more than $30 million of additional sales for Merck—all at federal taxpayer expense. Over a million more in taxpayer funds will be spent at the state level to pay the people providing the injections.
  • Ironically, most of the money would be wasted. Three injections costing $120 each are required over six months for immunization. The Center for Disease Control reports that 73% of teenagers receiving injections never complete the series to actually become immunized! That money is wasted. Only Merck benefits. Fortune/CNN last year reported that this “seems to be the equivalent of a design flaw”. No kidding.
  • The author, Assemblywoman Toni Atkins of San Diego, is trying to drum up people to call the Governor on the other side. She is pointing to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) as the sponsors. Their member doctors probably don’t even know that they are playing this role, because there is no mention of support for AB 499 on ACOG’s website. I decided to follow the money and found that while ACOG received corporate support from more than 35 companies, 60% of the grants came from Merck in 2010. In addition to that $477,000, Merck donated another 97,000 during the first quarter 2011.
