It's Official-- Fate of Marriage Goes to Voters
Sarah's Law Also Qualifies
SAN FRANCISCO, June 2, 2008-- Protect Marriage and Sarah's Law initiatives have both officially qualified for the November ballot.
The Protect Marriage Initiative would amend the state constitution by adding the following sentence: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." In the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex 'marriage", the initiative is the last opportunity to preserve marriage between a man and a woman in California and to uphold the will of the people expressed in Prop 22 defining marriage as between a man and a woman that passed in 2000 with over 61% of the vote.
In the meantime, our focus must be on educating people in our parishes on the importance of marriage through the Stand with Children coalition. Please ask your organization and others in your parish to join. Download your action kit with instructions.
Catholics for the Common Good is working closely with ProtectMarriage.com, the only campaign in support of the marriage amendment. We will keep you informed about the campaign and how you can support it as it develops. For more information on the initiative, go to ProtectMarriage.com.
Sarah's Law (Family Notification) is a new attempt to pass a constitutional amendment that would require the notification of a parent or an alternative family member before an abortion can be performed on a minor child. The measure is designed to protect minors from the dangers of secret abortion. For more information, go to http://www.friendsofsarah.com/.
