Will Setback Be Temporary or Permanent?

SAN FRANCISCO, May 15, 2008 -- Today, the California Supreme Court overturned the state law protecting marriage as only between a man and a woman by a narrow 4-3 margin. CCG Chairman Bill May was at the Court this morning with some of our faithful CCG volunteer leaders when the decision was released.

"Today the Court turned its back on both the will of the people and the common interest of every child in California in having a married mother and father," said Bill May, chairman of Catholics for the Common Good and spokesperson for Stand with Children.

"Pope Benedict reminds us not to lose hope, May said in an email to CCG subscribers. "Hope is critical to orient us to what is good. Pray always. Our witness to the truth about marriage must be approached as a work of the Holy Spirit."

Because of the size and influence of California, this will have negative consequences nationwide. It is important to realize that the ProtectMarriage.com initiative, on which many of you have worked so hard, is now our last chance to restore marriage between a man and a woman in California. With your help, ProtectMarriage.com submitted over 1.1 million signatures in the effort to place it on the November 2008 ballot.

Through ProtectMarriage.com, the voters can overrule the judges, but we will have to devote every resource and ounce of energy we can to that effort. We will provide you with more information about that shortly. In the meantime talk to your friends and family members, and ask them to subscribe to ccgaction.org to stay informed.

May was disappointed but not surprised, "[T]the majority found that there is no compelling state interest in restricting marriage to people who engage in reproductive acts [men and women]. Tell that to the 40% percent of children born out of wedlock each year or the 34% of children living without their fathers. It is clearly in the public interest to encourage men and women to marry because of the staggering and tragic social consequences for children born to single women or cohabitating couples. By disconnecting marriage from the public interest and overturning the will of the people, the Court has undermined the very foundation of society."
