Archbishop Cordileone: Understanding the Reality of Marriage Critical to New Evangelization

HANCEVILLE, AL, July 11, 2014 -- Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone gave a stunning address admonishing priests to preach about marriage often. Unless the true understanding of marriage is restored, the concept of God as Father and the nuptial relationship between Christ and the Church will no longer make sense. It will make evangelization difficult if not impossible.

Archbishop Cordileone, Chair of the USCCB Subcommittee on the Defense and Promotion of Marriage, addressed the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy, which met at Our Lady of Angels Monastery in Hanceville, AL July 8-11.

After explaining why the true meaning and purpose of marriage has become obscured from the culture, the Archbishop took the priests gathered through a treatise based on scripture of the marriage between man and woman as an image of the destiny of man in communion with the Trinity. The theology is beautiful, but very deep and high level as appropriate for this sophisticated audience of priests. It is not for the faint of heart as so many concepts are pulled together that may be unfamiliar. However, those who listen to the end will be rewarded with insights into how closely the reality of marriage in God's plan for creation is linked to the understanding of God Himself and his relationship with human kind.
