Marriage and Social Justice
SAN FRANCISCO, June 12, 2014  If you knew that Catholics for the Common Good was based in California and you noticed on its website a box with the words “Same-Sex Marriage” crossed out in a red circle—and the words “The wrong issue” above that, you might think this was some kind of “Left Coast” initiative, heavy on Catholic “social justice” and light on life, marriage, and family issues.

In reality, marriage unites a man and a woman with each other and any children born from this union.

“Realities simply are, whereas ideas are worked out … realities are greater than ideas.”

Leader's Action Inspires
Parish-Wide Marriage Study
CHULA VISTA CA, June 6, 2014 - When Catholics for the Common Good County Co-Chair Michael Brault approached Father Luke Jauregui, pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Chula Vista, CA about organizing a study program on the defense and promotion of the true meaning of marriage during Lent, he jumped at the opportunity.   At weekend Masses before Ash Wednesday he made an appeal to his parishioners, asking them to join a study group centered on Catholics for the Common Good's book "Getting the Marriage Conversation Right."   A total of 80 parishioners signed up to participate in one of 6 English or Spanish groups that met weekly.  Two of the groups were led by Father Jauregui himself.

Bill May Presents Vision for
New Marriage Movement to
National Catholic Leaders

BIRMINGHAM, AL, May 13, 2014 – Catholics for the Common Good (CCGI) President, William B. May, presented a vision for a new, positive marriage movement during an address at the national Catholic Leadership Conference in Birmingham, Alabama on May 2. Remembering the recent canonization of St John Paul II, May said, “We need to follow the advice that he gave to Solidarity in Poland and the approach he used that led to the downfall of communism. ‘Let your work serve human dignity, let it elevate man, let it elevate families, let it elevate whole peoples!’”

Ignoring an Inequality Culprit:
Single-Parent Families
NEW YORK, April 20, 2014 -- Suppose a scientific conference on cancer prevention never addressed smoking, on the grounds that in a free society you can't change private behavior, and anyway, maybe the statistical relationships between smoking and cancer are really caused by some other third variable. Wouldn't some suspect that the scientists who raised these claims were driven by something—ideology, tobacco money—other than science?

On Tuesday, the Appeals Court announced that the stay would remain in effect pending appeal.

The Grammys, an Occasion of Sin?
As Mockery of Marriage Continues
Celebrate World Marriage Day, Feb. 9
SAN FRANCISCO, January 28, 2014 -- Sadly, everywhere we turn, allies of the gay rights movement are making profane and irreverent spectacles of so-called marriages between same-sex couples. They are happening at inappropriate venues, which have been previously associated with family entertainment or awards for achievements in the arts and entertainment. Two recent examples include a wedding on a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade and a group wedding during the Grammy Awards. What should the appropriate Christian response be to such stunts?

Parenthood, children's rights

Multiple Parents in a
“Brave New World
SAN FRANCISCO, November 14, 2013 -- Recently, the California governor signed a law whereby children could legally have not just two, but three parents at the same time. This is the fifth state, plus the District of Columbia, to have such legislation. The law is proposed, naturally, under the rubric of “helping the child,” of keeping him out of a foster home. Whether giving a child two “parents” of the same sex is good for the child in the first place is likewise not brought up. The bill was not clear about who will have authority when there is a conflict among the three parents about some course of family action. Will it require a unanimous vote or only a 2-1 majority?
