Obama’s HHS Mandate, a Consequence Predicted by Humanae Vitae

By James Brady

A recent survey that I conducted on myself shows that 100% of Catholics are guilty of sin.  Although a sample of one is normally considered far too small to make the claim of its application over the entire Catholic population, the results are valid.

Today we are being informed that 98% of Catholics have used a contraceptive device, pill, or method as though that should put an end to the outrage over the recent government action against religion in America.  What you probably haven’t heard is that this Catholic contraception number being thrown around comes from the Guttamacher Institute, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, the provider of birth control and abortion under the pretext of “reproductive health services”.

Notwithstanding that, the issue about the HHS mandate is not about whether people choose contraception, but the government trying to force religious institutions to violate their consciences by paying for something they know is wrong and harmful to women and men – bodily mutilations rendering someone sterile, chemicals that cause spontaneous abortions, and contraceptives. The Church’s position is reasonable

Before 1930, every Christian church opposed contraception and the Catholic Church continues its opposition because it always has and always will defend the truth about love, marriage, family, and the inviolable dignity of the human person.

In the 1960s Pope Paul VI made some prophetic remarks that even the most cynical among us might find disturbing.  In his encyclical against contraception (Humanae Vitae, 1968), Pope Paul predicted that contraceptive use would:

  • Lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality.
  • men would consider women as a mere instruments of selfish enjoyment and no longer as his respected and beloved companion
  • make contraception a dangerous weapon... in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral exigencies
  • lead man to think that he had unlimited dominion over his own body

In a matter of only 50 years since Pope Paul’s warning we have pornography, sexual promiscuity, embryonic manipulation, sex trafficking and legalized abortion completely out of control.  There has been an increase in the way people use one another along with a decrease in authentic self-given love. Children are entering the world as commodity for adult fulfillment or treated as a disease to avoid.  This is why the church is against contraception and the contraceptive mentality that results from its extensive use.  One cannot help but also wonder why we care so much now about the environment yet allow our bodies to become unnaturally contaminated by contraceptive drugs.

We know that contraception destroys openness to the gift of new life.  We know that birth control detracts us from the responsibility of self control.  As for abortion, we know it kills a person, destroys woman, and creates a world that has gone numb.  This is what contraception and abortion are and this is what they do and the ones suffering the most are once again woman and children.  So as you listen to the sound bites trivializing the seriousness of the latest government action or avoiding this reality that we are all a part of, remember to take the time to heal, to pray, to learn about the truth of the matter, and to stand up and fight for the Common Good.
