On September 6, 2006, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed SB 1437(Kuehl. The bill was an attempt to change the core curriculum in public schools, and to influence and require children to respect homosexual and transgender orientation and practices as a means of diminishing discrimination against such persons.

Respect regardless of behavior
"The human person, made in the image and likeness of God, can hardly be adequately described by a reductionist reference to his or her sexual orientation. . . . every person has a fundamental Identity: the creature of God, and by grace, his child and heir to eternal life. . . . “ #16
“The intrinsic dignity of each person must always be respected in word, in action and in law." #10
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith — On Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons and Non-discrimination Against Homosexual Persons

The bill would prohibit any materials, discussions or activities that would reflect adversely on homosexual or transgender people, which includes their lifestyles. SB 1437 would require textbooks to include examples of positive contributions, and only positive contributions, by people who are homosexual, bisexual, and transgender.

Schools should be required to teach respect and love for all human persons, as persons, regardless of their beliefs, lifestyles or behaviors — the only true approach to reduce discrimination and resentment against homosexuals and other diverse people. SB 1437, however, would ban teaching children such basic respect for humanity. Instead, it would have the effect of promoting discrimination and bigotry against people with different values and beliefs, especially serious Christians.

Parents Rights for Education
#2221. The fecundity (fruits) of conjugal love cannot be reduced solely to the procreation of children, but must extend to their moral education and their spiritual formation. "The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute." The right and the duty of parents to educate their children are primordial and inalienable.
Catechism of the Catholic Church

In addition to SB 1437’s assault on real diversity, it would also have the effect of confusing children further by reducing marriage to merely a life style choice — making it a moral and societal equivalent to homosexual partnerships and cohabitation. In fact, it would prevent discussion of the natural family with a married mother and father as the foundation of our society and the best environment for children to receive a good start on life.

SB 1437 would further undermine parents’ rights and responsibilities to educate their children according to their religious or moral beliefs regarding marriage, family and sexually. This blatant promotion of a special interest agenda would be fully integrated into the core curriculum and school activities. There would be no way to opt out, short of withdrawing children from public schools.
